Three Important Cleaning and Maintenance Tips for Plaster Ceilings

Posted on

Plaster ceilings come in a number of colours, with white being the most common. White plastered ceilings need to be cleaned and properly maintained at all times if they are to retain their durable and attractive condition. It is therefore important to learn about the proper processes to use in cleaning and maintaining a plaster ceiling before you invest in one.

Vacuuming and dusting the ceiling

If you want a quick clean for the ceiling, vacuum it with the brush attachment if you have to use the machine. However, it would be better to use a flannel cloth in place of the vacuum because the latter could damage the plaster. When doing the light cleaning, you also need to clean vents, light fixtures and other loose, hanging parts in the process. If the light dusting does not get the ceiling as clean as you would like it to be, you could give it an actual wash.

Washing off stains

One of the most effective home remedies to remove stains off a white ceiling is hydrogen peroxide. Mix one part hydrogen peroxide with four parts water, and use the mixture to wipe down the ceiling. This solution works well on plain-coloured ceilings and also on ceilings which have pastel colours. If you are going to try and use other bleaches to remove stains from the ceiling, use a little bit on a hidden patch tosee whether it will cause discolouration. If it causes discolouration, do not it use on the entire ceiling. If the solution works without making colours run, use it to remove the stain from the entire area. Rinse the ceiling with clean water and another clean cloth when the stain is removed.

Patching the ceiling

With time, your ceiling will wear out and develop holes. When holes start appearing on the ceiling, the only way to restore it is to patch them. Materials like drywall are excellent for the creation of these patches. You have to cut out square-shaped holes on the ceiling, attach the piece of drywall and glue it. You can then paint over the patch with white paint or the matching pastel colour. Wait for everything to dry before the ceiling is restored.

Plaster ceilings offer unmatched style, elegance and beauty when well maintained. They need to be kept free of water, extreme temperature and sharp objects. When these steps are followed, the plaster will last many decades.
